The World Masters Games is the world’s largest multi-sport event, and it is coming to New Zealand in 2017. The Waikato region is host to a number of events, making Stadium Motel in Hamilton an ideal place to stay during the competition.
The World Masters Games is held every four years, first being held in Toronto, Canada in 1985. It is dubbed as the pinnacle sporting event for Masters competitors worldwide.
The philosophies of the games are based around promoting friendship and understanding, along with competition, between mature sports people regardless of age, gender, race, religion, or sport status. With Auckland and the Waikato being the major centres of the event, New Zealand will get to experience everything that the event brings for 2017.
“We are extremely excited for the World Masters Games, and think the event is brilliant in promoting physical activity and friendly competition amongst mature athletes†says Stadium Motel owner Brian Stokes.
The events to be held in the Waikato region include cycling at the Velodrome in Cambridge and rowing on Lake Karapiro. Both are a short trip away from Stadium Motel and allow those who stay at Stadium a comfortable day trip to see the action. The rowing will be held from April 24-28 and cycling from April 26-28.
More than 25,000 participants from 100 countries will be competing at the games which are recognised by the International Olympic Committee. The 10-day festival celebrates the notion that competitive and social sport gives athletes a lifelong connection. New Zealand, notably Auckland and the Waikato region, will welcome people from all around the world to experience the culture.
There are a number of entertainment acts on display during the games, and participants and public alike are invited to attend these events. Participants will also be treated to a number of parties and functions to unwind after competing. The event opens on April 21 at 7.30pm and closes April 30 at 6.30pm.
“The World Masters Games will see a number of people traveling to New Zealand and we are excited to showcase our beautiful country†says Brian.
